  • Postprandial hypotension: Drop 1-2 hours after eating
  • Neurally mediated hypotension: Occurs after standing for long periods
  • Multiple system atrophy with orthostatic hypotension: Rare condition affecting the autonomic nervous system

Causes

  • Pregnancy
  • Heart conditions (e.g., heart attack, heart failure, valve disease)
  • Endocrine disorders (e.g., Addison’s disease, diabetes)
  • Dehydration
  • Blood loss
  • Severe infections (septic shock)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Certain medications

Symptoms

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Weakness

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests (e.g., ECG, echocardiogram)

Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Increasing fluid and salt intake
  • Wearing compression stockings
  • Medications (e.g., fludrocortisone, midodrine)
  • Treating underlying conditions

Prevention and Management

  • Stay hydrated
