Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath, also known as dyspnea, is a common symptom characterized by difficulty breathing or feeling unable to get enough air. It can range from mild to severe and may occur suddenly or develop over time.

Causes

Shortness of breath can be caused by various factors:

Acute Causes

  • Asthma flare-ups
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Heart attack
  • Allergic reactions
  • Foreign object inhalation

Chronic Causes

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Heart failure
  • Obesity
  • Anemia
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer

Clinical Presentation

Symptoms associated with shortness of breath include:

  • Feeling out of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Air hunger
  • Inability to breathe deeply
  • Rapid breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing

Diagnostic Approach

  1. Medical history and physical examination
  2. Assessment of vital signs
  3. Chest auscultation
  4. Initial tests:
  • Complete blood count
  • Thyroid function tests
  • ECG
  • Chest X-ray
  • Spirometry
  • NT-proBNP (for suspected heart failure)
  1. Additional tests based on clinical suspicion:
  • Echocardiogram
  • CT scan
  • Pulmonary function tests
  • Blood gas analysis

Management

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Bronchodilators for asthma or COPD
  • Antibiotics for respiratory infections
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Lifestyle modifications (e.g., weight loss, smoking cessation)
  • Anxiety management techniques
  • Cardiac medications for heart-related causes

Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience sudden, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, or loss of consciousness.
