Hyperhydration
Hyperhydration, also known as water intoxication or water poisoning, is a condition where the body contains an excessive amount of water. This can lead to a dangerous imbalance in electrolytes, particularly sodium.
Causes
- Excessive water intake in a short period
- Certain medical conditions (e.g., SIADH – Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone secretion)
- Extreme endurance activities without proper electrolyte replacement
- Psychiatric conditions leading to compulsive water drinking
- Iatrogenic causes (e.g., improper IV fluid administration)
Risk Factors
- Endurance athletes
- Military personnel during intense training
- Individuals with certain psychiatric disorders
- Infants fed overly diluted formula
- Ecstasy (MDMA) users
Symptoms
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Confusion or disorientation
- Muscle cramps and weakness
- Seizures
- In severe cases, coma or death
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and confirmed through:
- Blood tests to check sodium levels and other electrolytes
- Urine tests to assess urine concentration
- Assessment of fluid intake history
Treatment
Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause:
Mild Cases
- Fluid restriction
- Increased salt intake
Severe Cases
- Immediate medical attention required
- Intravenous administration of hypertonic saline solution
- Careful monitoring of electrolyte levels
- Treatment of underlying conditions
Prevention
- Balanced fluid intake, especially during endurance activities
- Proper electrolyte replacement during intense physical exertion
- Education about the risks of excessive water intake
- Monitoring of individuals at risk (e.g., psychiatric patients with water-seeking behavior)
It’s important to note that while hyperhydration is rare, it can be life-threatening. The key is to maintain a balance in fluid intake, particularly during intense physical activities or in hot environments.
