Allergic Reaction
Allergic reactions occur when the immune system overreacts to a typically harmless substance (allergen), producing histamine and causing various symptoms.
Symptoms
- Sneezing and runny nose
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Skin reactions: Hives, rashes, swelling
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Nausea or vomiting
In severe cases, anaphylaxis can occur, characterized by:
- Swelling of the throat and difficulty breathing
- Dizziness or fainting
- Rapid pulse
- Severe drop in blood pressure
Treatment
Mild to Moderate Reactions
- Antihistamines: Reduce histamine production and alleviate symptoms.
- Nasal decongestants: Help reduce nasal congestion and related symptoms.
- Topical treatments: Corticosteroid creams or cold compresses for skin reactions.
Severe Reactions (Anaphylaxis)
- Epinephrine auto-injector (e.g., EpiPen): Administer immediately to open airways and raise blood pressure.
- Emergency medical attention: Seek immediate care for severe reactions.
Prevention and Management
- Identify and avoid triggers
- Immunotherapy: Allergy shots or sublingual tablets to desensitize the immune system.
- Carry emergency medication for those with severe allergies.
- Create an allergy management plan with a healthcare provider.
Early identification of allergens and appropriate treatment can significantly improve quality of life for those with allergies.
